Synopsis:

In 1974 Toronto, Yongsun, a Korean immigrant haunted by the division of her homeland, stumbles upon a life-altering revelation: a newspaper article featuring a grainy photo of her father, who disappeared into North Korea 27 years ago. Overwhelmed by a mix of joy, grief, and a desperate need for answers, she embarks on a risky journey to Pyongyang, a decision that threatens to shatter the fragile peace she's built for her family in Canada.

Her son-in-law, a doctor planning to return to South Korea, fears the repercussions of her actions and threatens to divorce her daughter. Meanwhile, Yongsun's grown children grapple with the complexities of their Korean heritage and the uncertainties surrounding their mother's quest.

Navigating the complexities of a trip to Pyongyang during a time of heightened tensions, Yongsun faces unexpected challenges. She confronts the harsh realities not of the totalitarian regime, but of the world outside North Korea— strained relationships with her relatives in the South and the judgment of the Korean community in Toronto.
